Neighborhood-Based Programs PDF Print E-mail

The focus of the Neighborhood-Based Prevention Programs is to provide youth with important positive developmental opportunities and supports. Because neighborhood-based programs differ depending on the communities and youth served, resources, and infrastructure, there is no single model program.

The neighborhood-based program sites identify the specifics of their programs including the target populations they will serve; the community agencies with which they will collaborate; and the programming they will offer based on the needs and interests of youth they serve. Regardless of the differences for each program, the ultimate goal is to provide effective strategies that promote strong youth development.

In order to accomplish this goal, Neighborhood-Based Prevention Programs engage youth in developmentally supportive activities that provide increased social supports, services and opportunities. Across the programs, specific opportunities provided include

  • Caring, consistent relations with responsible adults in their families and the broader community.

  • Opportunities to engage in positive social and recreational activities with peers and families.

  • Opportunities to make positive contributions to their families, neighborhood, and community and to feel valued for those contributions.

  • Opportunities to learn and test new skills through participation in a wide range of social, cultural, educational, and service employability activities.

  • Opportunities to assist in the design and implementation of programs and service in which they participate.

Activities completed daily at each neighborhood-based program are recorded and compiled by New Futures. Brief descriptions of the activity, the activity length, and the number of youth participating are tracked. This information allows the activities to be categorized by content. The calculation of contact hours for the program participants in each of the opportunities areas listed previously or in content areas like employability, academics, recreational or arts is possible via the evaluation completed by New Futures.
